Single Sided Deaf Stereo Headphones: My Review of Yuni Headphones

Yuni headphones were recommended to me by a reader of this blog. I reached out to Dan, founder of Yuni Headphones http://www.yuniheadphones.com, to learn more about these headphones designed specifically for recreating a stereo listening experience for folks with unilateral hearing. Dan at Yuni made these headphones because he has family members with single sided deafness and he wanted those people to experience stereo music. As someone who hasn’t heard music in stereo in nine years, I was excited to try these out. I was given a pair of Yuni Headphones and asked to share an honest review.

I did find that the Yuni Headphones have a phenomenal music experience. The best way I can describe stereo music versus my normal mono experience is that there is a greater depth of sound. I listened to a musical soundtrack with many different instruments and voices singing, and it felt like the tones had space to separate and not be on top of each other, competing for space. The sound feels less compressed, with more space for a fuller music appreciation. I felt I could hear the different instruments better and also understand the lyrics more than I usually can. And the headphones have a very enjoyable sound quality.

Yuni Headphones give sound depth but do not recreate sound location. I tested that by listening to a current pop song that plays with left and right sound. Because all the sound is still being processed by one ear, location isn’t a possibility. They recreate a stereo sound by placing 2 speakers vertically oriented to give that stereo depth to the music.

The headphones are bluetooth compatible and also come with a cord if you have a device the cord can connect to. The box says a charge lasts 3 hours, I believe my charge has been lasting longer than that. The headphones squeeze my head fairly tightly, so though they aren’t noise canceling, I really can’t hear much of anything besides the music while wearing them. They do have a disclaimer not to wear them in safety concern situations, which I would agree with. I was wondering if I could wear my bone anchored hearing aid at the same time and have found that it is perfectly comfortable. I have heard some say the bass is a little loud, and I would concur that it could be quieter.

All in all, I am super excited about these headphones. I really enjoy the sound quality and the magic of a greater field of sound. If you think about what it is like when someone is on speakerphone with a group of people talking at the same time, that is like mono hearing. Having the opportunity to take that overlapping noise and give it space to differentiate sounds again in music is beautiful. I also just love that there is a product out for specifically single sided deaf folks. Usually, I feel like we are too niche to have items just for us. I was so excited to share these with a friend who has unilateral hearing and is a sound mixer.  His review was also that these are fantastic. I think a lot of people with one-sided hearing will love the experience that Yuni Headphones provide.

  1. can you use them with a shunt following a Vestibular Schwannoma removal?

    1. I would guess so after you are well healed. I don’t have a shunt, but I have an incision scar from my VS removal behind my ear. I also have a scar from my bone anchored hearing aid. I can wear the headphones comfortably. You could always try a regular over the ear pair of headphones and see if they are comfortable before you commit.
